This piece is about waste plastic in the soil; these rows represent cabbage. The plastic used to make them was collected from a field near my home, accidently dropped by workers during the process of packing cabbage. Each cabbage has its own bag. The field was littered with them. The bags were provided by the supermarkets where the cabbage is sold. ‘Field Packed for Freshness’ is printed on each bag (see the fragment at bottom right corner of the piece). The supermarkets must think this will impress their customers. But being packed in a plastic bag in a field (or anywhere else) makes no difference to its ‘freshness’. Plastic in the soil breaks down into micro plastics, is absorbed by the crops and the water system and ends up in the body tissues of animals and humans alike.
