3D Compositions
A thread running through my work concerns the interrelationship of people with the natural environment. These pieces were made from objects found whilst walking through woods, across fields or by the sea.
Cast Off is my submission for WHERE THE LINE BREAKS, the Newlyn Society of Artists spring exhibition 2024.
It is made from leaves, feathers, and plastic. In this work, the ‘Line’ I have in mind is the sliding threshold between seasons. Though there is no single, tangible line between the seasons, there is a range of familiar signs that a threshold has been crossed (but not broken). It is a cyclical process of change which includes trees losing their leaves in autumn and birds moulting their feathers in spring. Leaves and feathers break down and return to the soil. But the plastic cast offs do not. Their cumulative effect is contributing to the disruption in the pattern of seasonal thresholds.
Trophy and Wader were shown in the Newlyn Society of Artists autumn exhibition SHOWCASE 2023.at Tremeneheere Sculpture Gardens in October 2023. One way or another, they are the waste products of human activity, either at work or leisure. The human or animal forms in the finished pieces emerge from qualities suggested by the materials and where they were found.
Trophy is currently on show in Falmouth Art Gallery's summer exhibition 'Ammeth - Farming in Cornwall, July 6th to Oct 6th 2024
